Experience in endoscopic stapedotomy technique and its audiological outcome: a case series

Abstract Background Stapedotomy is being performed endoscopically for otosclerosis in Sudan since 2011 with increasing number of patients. This prospective hospital-based study from Nov 2016 to 2020 states the clinic-demographic features otosclerosis; it describes this surgical technique and hearing outcome following endoscopic stapedotomy. Results Total included was 91 Females were 48, males 43 a female male ratio 1.1:1. Age ranged 19 years 52 mean age 30.6± 7 SD years. The main symptom decreased all patients (100%); 82 (90%), bilateral, followed by tinnitus 80 (88%) while two (2.2%) had vertigo. Family history stated 2 only. Audiological assessment pure tone audiogram (PTA) each ear (total 182) revealed that conductive loss (CHL) commonest type 148 ears (81.3%), mixed 30 (16.5%), 4 normal. Endoscopic stapedotomy 74 patients; safe; few complications managed successfully: one gusher revision, no facial nerve injury. Majority happened during first year. Mean air bone gap (ABG) gain 23.3± 7.2 dB, conduction (AC) 18.3 ± 8 Carhart notch disappeared 79.5%. Conclusions safe effective procedure steep learning curve satisfactory outcome. comparable international studies.
